Jane Kenyon attended the recent SDA conference in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and has sent these images to share with you.

Jane's solo exhibition, Transformation, was one of the SDA sponsored shows, and is on at the Joan Mondale Gallery, Textile Center, Minneapolis, from June 8 to July 16, 2011. Jane's website. Here are some pics from the show.

Jane is going to give us an informal presentation about the conference at the November meeting of the Vancouver SDA group, so we'll have a chance then to see some close up images of her spectacular work.

By all accounts it was a very impressive show.

As was this one: Vernal Bogren-Swift (from Haida Gwaii), also had a solo exhibition, In the Garden of Earthquakes, at the conference. AAW Gallery of Wood Art, Landmark Center, St. Paul, Minn. Through June 26, 2011. Here is some of her amazing work:

Detail below:

SDA members from Canada got together and discussed the Canadian presence within SDA and how we might achieve a higher profile (at least that is how I understand it). It's possible that a Canadian conference or other event may come out of this...

The image above shows some of the work in the Members' Show - the work on the right is by Barbara McCaffrey.

Julie Pongrac's beautiful shawl/scarf was selected for the Fashion Show:

The following three images are from India Flint's exhibition.

The following images are from Erica Spitzer Rasmussen's exhibition:

For more images and info on the conference exhibitions, you might like to look at Deidre Adams' blog. It includes LOTS of great pics and interesting details about the shows.

Website for the BC SDA

Last weekend I went to the opening reception at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour, for the show No Floors Required - works by Michelle Sirois-Silver and Rachelle LeBlanc. There was a good crowd (great to see some Surface Designers from Vancouver attending) and the works are quite stunning.  The show continues until July 31.

Right are Michelle (right) and Rachelle (who hails from Edmonton) taking a break after installing the show.

Rachelle will offer a workshop at FibreWorks, The Artistry of Rug Hooking People: July 28-31.
Left is one of her works from the exhibition.

Above are Michelle and Yvonne Stowell (owner of the gallery) with some of Michelle's work behind and in the foreground.

An installation view.

REPORT FROM THE SDA CONFERENCE

Check out the WEBSITE for SURFACE DESIGN BC.

Kristin Rohr (from Vancouver Island, BC) has sent some pictures from the SDA conference, which is happening this weekend in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

This is a sample that she did in Elin Noble's "Additions and Subtractions" workshop (see pic below). “We had four days of dyeing, discharging, poetry and laughter”.

"Yesterday we started with a Meet and Greet and then toured exhibits. Long distances, buses that broke down, road construction everywhere and marvellous exhibits."
Barbara and Lesley shown left, are SDA members from Vancouver Island.

Below are images of work from some of the exhibits - artists names are on the image - "fabulous work and an amazing range." (She did see Jane Kenyon’s exhibit the next day and said it was gorgeous.)

"Yesterday at lunch Canadians got together and I asked if anyone was interested in a Canadian presence within the organisation. We discussed it and generally agreed first to know each other, second to think about a national gathering or exhibit and third to be (more) visible on the SDA newsletter/blog with articles."

Thanks for sharing all this Kristin. We look forward to hearing other reports.

Website for this group.

The next Vancouver SDA meeting will be at the home of Ros Aylmer in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver on Tuesday, June 14th starting at 7pm. If you need driving instructions please email Jennifer. This will be our annual pre-summer potluck event. There won't be a special presentation - this is meant to be a very informal, social event - but do please bring your latest work, newest book acquisitions etc, for show-and-tell.

The next Sunshine Coast meeting will be at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour, so that we can view the exhibition of work by Anna Hergert - Wed, Sept 7th, 2011, starting at 11am. There will be a potluck lunch.

The image below shows the celebrations last week at the The Silk Weaving Studio. Diana Sanderson was celebrating 25 years on Granville Island. Be sure to see the show there at 1531 Johnston St., Granville Island, Vancouver (on the waterfront next to the Sandbar Restaurant). 604.687.7455, Website.

Pictured are (from left to right): Julia Manitius, Rene Corder Evans, Michelle Sirois-Silver, Kate Barber, Jo Skinner, Diana Sanderson, Anne Marie Andrishak, Hanna Haapasalo, Bonnie Adie and Monica Brammer. There were LOTS of other people there but I thought I did well to corral this many into one picture!

The exhibition at CraftHouse Gallery on Granville Island (also a 25th anniversary show) is worth seeing as well. Alas, I forgot to take out my camera there.

The Fall 2011 issue of Surface Design journal will focus on Canada - so if you are not a subscriber you might want to make a point of finding a copy somewhere.

It looks like BC will be represented at the SDA conference this week mainly by people from 'the islands.' Do be sure to attend the opening receptions for these two shows:
Jane Kenyon’s Transformations and
Vernal Borgren-Swift’s In the Garden.
No doubt the rest of us will see these in Surface Design Journal articles eventually. To the right is the invite for Jane's show - her work is shown in the middle image.
