Next Sunshine Coast meeting:

Jan 25th, 2012, starting at 11am, at Anne Gregory's place in Secehlt.

As usual this will include a pot luck lunch. We don't have a particular presentation or theme planned, but I'm sure many people will have newly completed projects or printed fabric or Christmas gifts (books?) to share with us, and I suspect we haven't heard all the news about workshops or lectures experienced during a very busy fall this year. Also if you've done any more thinking or sketching or sample-making or project work on your ethnically-inspired journal or textile project, please bring along anything you'd like to share with the group.

The idea for this show came from an exhibition of work by Nick Cave in juxtaposition with a show of African headdresses (see example of ethnic headdress left and Nick Cave's Soundsuits below).

The 15th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl - a free 3-day visual arts phenomenon. This event involves more than 10,000 people visiting artists in their studios in the area bounded by Main Street and Victoria Drive north of First Avenue in Vancouver, Canada.

I'm currently working on design concepts for a solo show at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery in 2012. While you're out crawling come by the studio, see the new works, and have a little conversation and refreshment. My studio is a little off the beaten path but close to most of the venues especially the William Clark Studios and the Old Foundry Building. It's easily accessed from the back of the building and I'm fortunate to be able to offer wheelchair access.

The Vancouver Island SDA group (VISDA) has a new exhibition opening soon:

Fibres @ the Hill; Nov 2-28, 2011 (open daily 10-5) at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, 3220 Cedar Hill Rd., Victoria, BC. The opening reception is on Nov 4th from 6-8pm.

Pat Crucil's exhibition of New Work opened at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour on Sept 25, 2011, and there were many people in attendance. We were celebrating not only the wonderful body of work that she has created in the last 18 months, and her contributions to the fibre arts world over the last 25 years, but also her 75th birthday. Final showing of The Game: Another Take on the Exquisite Corpse

The final installment of The Game: Another Take on the Exquisite Corpse, opened at Seymour Art Gallery in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, on Tuesday, August 30th. It runs until September 5th, 2011. Check out our website for an explanation of the concept behind this exhibition. These works were all created by BC and Yukon members of the SDA, and invited friends. Each piece combines the work of three artists.

The Exquisite Corpses always spark animated conversation and have been a great hit with the general public - who were given a chance to create their own pieces in Play the Game, next door to the exhibition.

Michelle Sirois-Silver's exhibition Shift, opened at Crafthouse Gallery on Granville Island in Vancouver, on Thursday, July 21, 2011. It continues until September 1st. By all accounts the opening reception was very well attended and I`m sure there were fascinating discussions about the concept behind the show as well as Michelle`s beautiful work.

From the curatorial essay that Bettina Matzkuhn wrote for the exhibition :

‘If a rug is not on the floor is it still a rug? If it has been altered materially, so it will not stand up to wear, what shall we call it? If a perfectly serviceable hooked rug is framed behind glass, how does it function? Michelle Sirois-Silver has used her skill in the traditional folk art practice of rug hooking to make these handsome works; she has used strategies from contemporary art theory to force these questions. The rugs on the wall might still be rugs, they have simply been presented differently for us to admire their textured and graphic power.’

` “Hit and Miss” is a stream-of-consciousness way to use up short bits of fabric. Bright and subtle line up in short clips, like words in text, to create run-on sentences... Sirois-Silver has mounted a large, vibrant ‘hit and miss’ rug on a white card backing, and framed it in a shallow shadowbox behind glass.’

SDA member Pat Crucil is an art quilter who lives in Sechelt, BC, on the Sunshine Coast.

Her wonderful art quilts are being featured in two exhibitions this summer and fall.

Leigh Square's website

Pat’s fabric is all hand-dyed and printed, and then heavily quilted. In these new works, Pat has used Deconstructed Screenprinting extensively (a technique first created by artist/teacher Kerr Grabowski). It is a method that is full of surprises and Pat has utilized these unique prints to great effect. The spare elegance of her gameboard series (of which Serenity is one), reflects her background in, and passion for painting.

Here (right) is a detail of her piece, Spring Study.

Pat has long been an advocate for contemporary quilt art. She is an artist, teacher, juror and mentor, and was a founding member of both the Fibre Art Network (FAN) and the Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild. She acts as co-coordinator of the Sunshine Coast SDA group.

This is just a taste of what you will see at the exhibitions.

Jane Kenyon attended the recent SDA conference in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and has sent these images to share with you.

Jane's solo exhibition, Transformation, was one of the SDA sponsored shows, and is on at the Joan Mondale Gallery, Textile Center, Minneapolis, from June 8 to July 16, 2011. Jane's website. Here are some pics from the show.

Jane is going to give us an informal presentation about the conference at the November meeting of the Vancouver SDA group, so we'll have a chance then to see some close up images of her spectacular work.

By all accounts it was a very impressive show.

As was this one: Vernal Bogren-Swift (from Haida Gwaii), also had a solo exhibition, In the Garden of Earthquakes, at the conference. AAW Gallery of Wood Art, Landmark Center, St. Paul, Minn. Through June 26, 2011. Here is some of her amazing work:

Last weekend I went to the opening reception at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour, for the show No Floors Required - works by Michelle Sirois-Silver and Rachelle LeBlanc. There was a good crowd (great to see some Surface Designers from Vancouver attending) and the works are quite stunning. The show continues until July 31.

REPORT FROM THE SDA CONFERENCE

Kristin Rohr (from Vancouver Island, BC) has sent some pictures from the SDA conference, which is happening this weekend in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

This is a sample that she did in Elin Noble's "Additions and Subtractions" workshop (see pic below). “We had four days of dyeing, discharging, poetry and laughter”.

"Yesterday we started with a Meet and Greet and then toured exhibits. Long distances, buses that broke down, road construction everywhere and marvellous exhibits."

Below are images of work from some of the exhibits - artists names are on the image - "fabulous work and an amazing range." (She did see Jane Kenyon’s exhibit the next day and said it was gorgeous.)

"Yesterday at lunch Canadians got together and I asked if anyone was interested in a Canadian presence within the organisation. We discussed it and generally agreed first to know each other, second to think about a national gathering or exhibit and third to be (more) visible on the SDA newsletter/blog with articles."

The next Vancouver SDA meeting will be at the home of Ros Aylmer in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver on Tuesday, June 14th starting at 7pm. If you need driving instructions please email Jennifer. This will be our annual pre-summer potluck event. There won't be a special presentation - this is meant to be a very informal, social event - but do please bring your latest work, newest book acquisitions etc, for show-and-tell.

The next Sunshine Coast meeting will be at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour, so that we can view the exhibition of work by Anna Hergert - Wed, Sept 7th, 2011, starting at 11am. There will be a potluck lunch.

There are many interesting events on the horizon at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast.

The Game: Another Take on the Exquisite Corpse can be viewed up until June 12 at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour (see previous posting). After that, there will be one final opportunity to see it at the Seymour Art Gallery, 4360 Gallant Ave, North Vancouver – from August 30 to September 5, 2011. The second instalment of our current exhibition the game: another take on the exquisite corpse, will soon open at FibreWorks Gallery in Pender Harbour (just a delightful ferry ride and drive north from Vancouver, on the Sunshine Coast).

If you missed the show when it was on at Leigh Square Community Arts Village, or you want to see it again, here’s your chance – come to the opening reception if you can. What: The inspiration for this exhibition comes from the 1920s Surrealist game, titled Exquisite Corpse or Cadavre Exquis: This is a game of folded paper which consists in having several people compose a phrase or drawing collectively, none of the participants having any idea of the nature of the preceding contribution(s). The now classic example, which gave its name to the game, is the first phrase obtained in this manner: “Le cadaver / exquis / boira / le vin / nouveau” - The exquisite corpse shall drink the young wine. The exploration continues with this new manifestation, a gathering of works by BC and Yukon Members of the Surface Design Association who have exhilarated in happenstance and the imaginary.

Who: Artists from BC and the Yukon (check on our website to see info on some of them) have contributed to this project, but also from Quebec, the UK, Holland and the US. Participating artists are:

FibreWorks Workshops and SDA Conference

FibreWorks Studio & Gallery in Pender Harbour, is offering the following workshops in May. Jackie Abrams is an amazing basketry artist and teacher from Vermont, who uses heavy, hand-painted paper (cut with a pasta cutter!) to weave her exquisite structures – so the process is great fun for surface designers. Check out her website.

The workshop info is as follows:

May 12 – 14, 2011 – Paper! Colour! Hexagonal Weave Baskets with Jackie Abrams – Workshop. Create baskets inspired by an Asian technique, the openwork hexagonal weave. Experiment with the possibilities of form, size and colour design. Some basket experience is helpful but not essential.

May 16-18, 2011 - (Re)Cover the Surface with Jackie Abrams – Workshop. A woven basket, a gourd or even a plastic bowl, can be altered by changing the surface. It can be given a new skin of colour and texture by covering the surface with paper, fabrics, paints, mediums, beads and found objects. Explore materials and be surprised at what you discover.

SDA Conference

Every two years, the Surface Design Association holds a conference – this time it will be held from June 9 to June 12, 2011 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, with pre- and post-conference workshops and study tours. It seems we will have a large contingent of members from BC/Yukon attending so we hope to hear all about it on their return. It’s going to be an amazing lineup – this link will take you to the conference info.

I’ve attended the SDA conference twice before and found it incredibly inspiring – mind-blowing exhibitions, thought-provoking lectures and panel discussions, the temptations of a trunk show and a vendors’ market, and many wonderful opportunities for networking with fellow fibre artists. You won’t regret it if you decide to attend.

Urbanity

We had a very interesting meeting in Vancouver on March 29th at Urbanity, 2412 Granville Street, between Broadway & 8th - 7pm. The theme was the marketing and selling of textile arts. There were three invited panelists and the discussion was moderated by Julia Manitius (the owner of Urbanity).

Sarah Murray has worked in different facets of the fashion and journalism industries since 1996. She started The Honey Mustard Fashion and Media Services in 2004 where she has played an invaluable part in the promotion of local designers and fashion. Her website

Laura Bucci is a designer-maker drawing inspiration from vintage illustrations. She designs and makes a line of fabric reusable cup cozies and other personal and home accessories. She sells to stores locally and to the US, as well as having an online store. See her current product line pictured left. Her website

Gail Conzatti - After over 15 years in the telecommunications and technology industry, Gail escaped from the corporate world in 2003 by branching out as a handbag designer. Originally designing, individually hand-painting, sewing and selling the bags herself, KAIROS Designs handbags are now designed by Gail and sewn in Vancouver by a home-based seamstress. In 2004, Gail had an opportunity to move her home-based business out of her home and open a boutique that sells Canadian-made clothing and accessories - Tutta Mia. There was a lively discussion that covered, among other things: how to bring the customers in; how to grow your business; how to use the social networking tools available today; the importance of your website as the core of your online promotional efforts; the importance of good, high resolution images; the use of ‘stories’ to promote your business; what a publicist can do for you and what it might cost.

Angles that might make a compelling media story: charity event; ‘authenticity’; timeliness; controversy; celebrity connection; eco-friendly…

There was much talk about how to engage help with tasks like sewing or accounting when you’re just starting and finances are tight. Gail had a great suggestion – bartering. It has its pitfalls of course, so it’s important to be clear about who gets what, but this can work. Gail still uses this tool - she trades her product for hair styling. Another important point here – if you think you can’t afford to hire anyone, consider your ‘opportunity cost’ – having someone doing the accounting frees up some of your time to spend on design, production, marketing...all of which should improve your revenue.

The next Vancouver meeting of the BC Surface Design group will take place in late May or early June – this will be our usual pre-summer potluck supper gathering. Date and venue to be announced.

There's a fantastic show on at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Andean textiles (see image above) - a MUST see. Lots of other great stuff there too of course, not necessarily textile related. The Textile collection was closed when we were there - seems to always be the case unless they have a special show on. If you're in NY on a Friday try to be there Fri afternoon - then finish off with drinks on the mezzanine level where they have live classical music - LOVELY!

We went to the Met, the International Centre for Photography, MOMA, Cooper Hewitt Museum where there was a Sonia Delauney show focusing on her textile work (see image above of one of her bathing suits) and the Drawing Centre. Wandered into the Guggenheim just to admire the architecture but ran out of time to see any shows there.

Oh and speaking of food, the cafe in the American Folk Museum (just next to MOMA) is great. Try something that includes the cornmeal muffins!

A blog update - a new approach!

It has been a while since we had a blog entry. Jennifer is dealing with a very painful shoulder making working on the computer difficult. This seems like the perfect time for us to change the way we work with the blog. Instead of long blog entries that cover many months of the same info that Jennifer sends out in emails, we want more frequent blog postings to take over. For this reason we are urging those on the email list to sign up for the blog. Jennifer will still gather the info, and I will post it to the blog. Please bear with us as we work it out! – Julia Manitius

The next Vancouver SD meeting is scheduled for March 29th. We will meet in Urbanity where we will have a panel discussion on marketing and selling our work. Please let Jennifer know if you plan to attend, as we need to keep an eye on numbers. More information will be posted by the end of the week. It should be an interesting evening.

The next Sunshine Coast SD meeting is scheduled for March 23rd, at the home of Anne Gregory. Please let Jennifer know if you can or cannot attend, if you are in the Sunshine Coast group. There will be a potluck lunch as usual.

Only two weeks left for Cultural Cloth, an exhibition of world textiles being held at the Gallery at Artisan Square on Bowen Island from the 4th of February to mid-March.

Exquisite Corps Exhibition:

The Exquisite Corps Exhibition will soon be hung at FibreWorks in Pender Harbour. If you have your Exquisite Corpse at home, please be sure to complete any repairs needed and get it back to Jennifer or Yvonne Stowell well before the end of March. The show goes from May 7 to June 12th and the opening reception will be May 15 from 2-4pm. It would be great if we had lots of our members there, especially those who have work in the show. It might seem like a long way to travel, but it's completely do-able in a day - make it into an outing (even an overnighter!) with a few others. Jennifer has rental cabins on her property and there are lots of other places to stay in Pender Harbour too. The Play the Game tables set up again - should be fun.
Seymour Art Gallery would like to have artists' CVs/artist statements for the EC exhibition that will be held there in Sept 2011 - so if you are part of The Game, please email Jennifer something. Lots of time but we are all busy and even more so as summer approaches.

The last Vancouver Surface Design meeting took place on Tues, Nov 16th at the home of Susan James in Vancouver. Catherine Nicholls gave a presentation about her recent trip to England for the Festival of Quilts . The next meeting will be on Tues, January 25th – venue and focus TBA. Members of the BC SDA have invited other artists to participate in the exhibition The Game: Another Take on the Exquisite Corpse, which will take place September 23 – November 7, 2010 at Leigh Square Arts Village Gallery, Port Coquitlam. (see MAP -- Take bus 160 from Central Waterfront Station)

Artists who took part in the 2009 Hanji paper fashion show, held on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC, have been invited to send their paper fashions to Korea, for the Stream of Hanji Fashion exhibition, to be held in Jeon-ju, Korea, in October 2010. Participating artists include Brigitte Rice, Anne Marie Andrishak, Ros Aylmer, Dorothy Cross, Jo Anne Ryeburn, Rene Evans, Cathie Barr, Monica Brammer, and Dawn Russell.

The Jeon-ju Hanji Fashion Association, which is sponsoring the exhibition, was created 13 years ago to support and promote the work of artists working with traditional handmade Korean paper, Hanji, which is made from the inner bark of mulberry trees.

Oct. 16 – 17: Workshop with Julie Pongrac at FibreWorks: “Complex Fibre Made Simple Using Mushrooms.” Using mushrooms found locally, students will learn how to take one natural dye and explore what can be created from it by altering the dye bath, dying different fibres, blending fibres and colours and plying these in different ways.

The last Vancouver Surface Design meeting took place at the home of Catherine Nicholls in West Vancouver on Monday May 3rd at 7pm. This was our annual pot luck supper and the theme of the meeting was design/sketch/inspiration/journal books that you use in your design process. Quite a few new guests; lots of great show-and-tell. The next meeting will be June 28th, 2010; venue tba. Entries for the Exquisite Corpse show can be handed in and Jennifer Love will give a presentation about the Reinvention Conference (SDA/SAQA) held in San Fransisco in March. Yvonne Wakabayashi recently won Best in Show at an international juried show called "Collective Threads" for her Pina Sea Forms II with a nice monetary prize and an offer to have a solo exhibition there next year. There were 41 entries in this competition. It was held at the University of Central Missouri, Department of Art and Design, Warrensburg, MI.

Catherine Nicholls’ beautiful studio has been featured in Cloth Paper Scissors- Studios magazine - the Summer 2010 issue. Catherine is part of thr3fold, with UK artists Linda and Laura Kemshall, and they will have several events in BC this summer – see following section.

Cher Cartwright’s quilt, “On the Other Hand,” will be exhibited in the upcoming Art Quilt Elements 2010 (previously known as ArtQuilts at the Sedgwick) which is now a biennial juried exhibition celebrating its ninth show. The exhibition will be held at the Wyane Art Center, outside of Philadelphia, PA, from April 17 to May 19, 2010. The jurors, Jason Pollen, Robin Schwalb and Deborah C. Linda Wallace
July 1 – August 22, 2010: Linda Wallace is one of six artists (Tapestry 3-2-1) whose work will be featured in “Dialogues: Tapestry and Human/Nature: An exploration by artists from New Mexico, Canada and Australia,” at the South Broadway Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM. “Threadbare,” is one of her ten pieces that will be exhibited there. This show is being held in conjunction with HGA's Convergence 2010.

Linda has had two of her combined tapestry and embroidery pieces accepted into the American Tapestry Biennial 8, at the Elder Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska, Sept 20 - Nov 15, 2010. This event will be held during meetings of the Textile Society of America – for more information about the TSA meetings see: Textile Society of America. She is also exhibiting in ATA's small format exhibition in a gallery on Canyon Road, Santa Fe. And her work will be featured (with that of an Australian tapestry artist who is part of Tapestry 3-2-1) in an upcoming issue of Fiberarts – more on that later. Alison Kobylnyk has won 2nd prize for her artwork "Green Peace" in the CACGV LOOK 2010 show in Victoria. (Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria). Alison's website

Eileen Wheeler has an article being published in the March/April issue of PieceWork, entitled “Knitting for Survival: Anna Samens and Her Knitting Machine”. Based on research for her 2005 MA thesis at UBC, which explored textile stories as a means to enhance women’s history, it outlines how textile skills and business acumen were empowering to a WW II Latvian/Canadian refugee.

Gloria Daly's quilt “Polvs Arcticvs (North Pole)” will be shown along with 28 other quilts, in the exhibit O, CANADA, initially at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago and then at various IQF and Quilt Market shows. This piece was originally designed for the Opera Frobisher performed in Calgary AB.

Catherine Nicholls has an article coming out in the March /April issue of Cloth Paper Scissors. And her quilt "Sedna" has been included in 500 Art Quilts a recent publication by Lark Books. This book, juried by Karey Bresenhan, showcases the work of 363 fabulous contemporary quilters. ISBN: 978-1-60059-058-0. Website: Lark Books.

Lesley Richmond has recently completed five pieces for a new ship which is being built for Celebrity Cruise Lines. The piece is 42"x 42" and called 'Leaf Cloth Dance'.

Alison Kobylnyk has won 2nd prize for her artwork "Green Peace" in the CACGV LOOK 2010 show in Victoria. (Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria). Alison's website

Eileen Wheeler has an article being published in the March/April issue of PieceWork, entitled “Knitting for Survival: Anna Samens and Her Knitting Machine”. Based on research for her 2005 MA thesis at UBC, which explored textile stories as a means to enhance women’s history, it outlines how textile skills and business acumen were empowering to a WW II Latvian/Canadian refugee.

Gloria Daly’s quilt “Polvs Arcticvs (North Pole)” will be shown along with 28 other quilts, in the exhibit O, CANADA, initially at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago and then at various IQF and Quilt Market shows. This piece was originally designed for the Opera Frobisher performed in Calgary AB.

Catherine Nicholls has an article coming out in the March /April issue of Cloth Paper Scissors. And her quilt "Sedna" has been included in 500 Art Quilts a recent publication by Lark Books. This book, juried by Karey Bresenhan, showcases the work of 363 fabulous contemporary quilters. ISBN: 978-1-60059-058-0. Lark Books.

Lesley Richmond has recently completed five pieces for a new ship which is being built for Celebrity Cruise Lines. The piece is 42"x 42" and called 'Leaf Cloth Dance'.

The last meeting of the Vancouver Surface Design took place on February 8th, 2010, hosted at the home of Michelle Sirois-Silver in Vancouver. Aside from a discussion of our Exquisite Corpse project and exhibition (which is planned for fall of 2010), we enjoyed a low-key evening of show-and-tell and discussion of upcoming events. Next meeting will be at the home of Catherine Nicholls in West Vancouver on Monday May 3rd at 7pm. As this will be our pre-summer-break meeting, it was also be our annual pot luck supper. The theme of the meeting will be design/sketch/inspiration/journal books that you use in your design process. The following information is taken from the most recent newsletter of the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Art:

We were saddened to hear that Barry Goodman, President, Greater Vancouver Weavers' and Spinners' Guild from 2003 to 2007, passed away on Sat, July 25, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Barry was a professional artist, specializing in embroidered portraits and figure studies in black and white.

From 1997 to 2008, Barry's work appeared in exhibitions across Europe and North America, including many local exhibitions. You can see a gallery of Barry's work and read about the philosophy behind his work as artist and teacher at www.bgood.ca/index.html.

Congratulations to the members (past and present) of the Fibre Art Studio on Granville Island, 610 Johnston Street, Vancouver, which celebrated its 30th anniversary recently.

Congratulations to Jane Kenyon on winning the Grand Prize of the Pfaff International Art Embroidery Challenge. The PFAFF® Art Embroidery Challenge is a truly global competition judged by an international jury. The works are created predominantly on a home sewing machine using either freehand embroidery or/and embroidery software. The works of the winners as well as the works of selected artists from different countries are shown exclusive, apart from the other shows, at the Knitting & Stitching show at Alexandra Palace, London.

Lesley Richmond, Yvonne Wakabayashi, Joanna Staniszkis and Ruth Scheuing are featured in a new publication by Telos Publishing called "Art Textiles of the World: Canada," released in April 2009. For the full list of artists, go to www.telos.net/. An exhibition to accompany the book showed at the Centre des Textiles Contemporains de Montreal in April and May 2009.

Sept 24 – Jan. 3: “A Common Thread: Textiles from Stó: lō, South Asian & Mennonite Communities”; presented by The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford, working in collaboration with the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Faculty of Arts, The UFV Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies, the Mennonite Central Committee of British Columbia (MCCBC), Stó: lō educators and artisans and the Maiwa Foundation. A Common Thread explores cultural similarities and differences and provides an opportunity to examine a tapestry of traditions from weaving to quilting to the story-telling that is contained in each piece of art work. In conjunction with the visual arts display, artefacts including local quilt making and weaving equipment highlight the history of textiles.
